Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv is pleased to announce the signing of American forward Richard Hendrix (23, 2.03 meters) to a two year contract.

Head coach David Blatt had this to say about the team’s newest addition: “this young and extraordinarily talented player fits in perfectly with our program. He can play both forward and center with Maccabi. He’s a very strong physical player with excellent ability with his back to the basket and is a wonderful rebounder. No less important, he has a marvelous personality with a strong work ethic and gives all he has on the court. Wherever he plays he is loved by the fans and the fans are excited about him, I hope and believe that the same will happen here.”

Last season (2009/10) he was the outstanding player of the Spanish team CB Granada (10th in the league) with impressive numbers – 13.1 points a game, 6.9 rebounds (5th in the league), 1.4 (3rd in the league) and 65.2% from two point range (5th in the league) in an average of 26 minutes a game.

Hendrix finished in sixth place in the Spanish League Index (16.1 index points per game) and was chosen “The Discovery of the Season” of the Spanish League in an official survey of the league of coaches, players, reporters and fans in Spain. Others who have won this title in the past include Ricky Rubio, Sergio Rodriguez and Mirza Teletović.

Hendrix is a physical player with an outstanding finishing ability under the basket. He is a gifted rebounder thanks to his extremely long arms and is a great blocker. He was one of the best big men this season in Spain, the strongest league in Europe. In college he was called the “Double Double Machine” due to the impressive numbers he presented every game in points and rebounds.

Starting in the 2005/06 season, Hendrix played for three years for the University of Alabama (where Robert Horry and Antonio McDyess among others have starred in the past). After his best season (2007/08) where he presented impressive averages of 17.8 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2 blocks per game, he was chosen 49th in the NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors but did not get to play on the team.

In December 2008 he started playing in the NBA’s development league, where he played nine games in Bakersfield and during most of the season he starred with the Dakota Wizards, posting averages of 14.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. He finished second in rebounds in the development league and partisapated in the Allstar games of the league in Febuary 2009.
