Sofo's first term with Maccabi (2010-2012) lasted for two years and was marked by success; indeed, his first season was the best of his career. He was completely unstoppable in the paint, and led Maccabi to the final of the Euroleague Final Four (with a 16-6 record) with averages of 12 points, 4.1 rebounds, 58.5% shooting from the field and receiving 4.7 fouls per game, all in 19 minutes of playing time. For the first time in his career, Sofo was named to the All-Euroleague First Team.
His second season in Israel got off to a strong start with averages of 11.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in the first round of the Euroleague, but in the advanced stages of the season he suffered an injury and his numbers went down. His Euroleague season concluded with averages of 8.7 points and 3 rebounds per game while receiving 4.3 fouls in 16 minutes of playing time.
Sofo reached almost all of his greatest achievements in the Euroleague while playing for Maccabi - 38 index points in one game (against Prokom) 28 points in a game (against Milan), 22 points in one half (against Milan), 29 minutes (against Partizan), 10 rebounds (against Rome), 5 assists (against Caja Laboral), 3 blocks (against Barcelona and Partizan) and more.
In his first two years with Maccabi, Sofo won all of the Israeli titles: two Israeli Championships and two Israeli Cups, as well as the Adriatic League Championship.
Last season, Schortsanitis returned to Greece to play for Panathinaikos Athens, where he won the Greek double (championship and cup). In the Euroleague he averaged 12 minutes of playing time, contributing an average of 7.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Sofo began his professional career with Iraklis Saloniki and also played for Cantú and Aris, but the bulk of his career was spent with Olympiacos, where he spent 5 seasons before coming to Maccabi.
Head coach of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv David Blatt: "We're excited about having Sofo return to Maccabi Tel Aviv. We had a great experience with him, and you need to remember that while playing in the yellow and blue Sofo played the best basketball of his life and was named to the All-Euroleague First Team. He's a unique player, and while he was here before our fans were crazy about him. I can't wait to start working with him again, and I have hopes that we will do great things together."
