A couple of days before they enter the final straight in the EuroLeague's regular season Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv faced Hapoel Holon on the road. Knowing that a win will rank them at the top of the domestic standings Maccabi opened the game poised, however both teams stayed close as the game went to overtime from which the hosts came on top. Maccabi will now travel to Istanbul as they will travel to Istanbul to face the EuroLeague reigning champs Fenerbache on Tuesday.
Coach Spahija's starting five: Jackson, Cole, Mashour, Bolden and Tyus. Bolden scored Maccabi's first points of the game with a corner jumper (0:2), Pnini tied the game from the line but a great defense by Tyus turned into instant offense with Cole going coast to coast for the easy layup (2:4). Rice tied the game three minutes into the first quarter. Cole found Jackson for a wing three pointer (4:7). Rice Jr. and Holloway tied the game (7:7). Holon got the 10:9 lead but John-Di's three pointer sparked a 6:0 run by the yellows giving them the 10:15 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Holon managed to cut Maccabi's lead down but Jackson's free throw kept Holon at bay as the first quarter came to an end with the yellows ahead 14:18.
John-Di started the second quarter on fire scoring four points (14:22) forcing Coach Shamir to call for a timeout. Holon reacted with an 8:0 run to tie the game with six minutes remaining in the first half. Tyus' hustle found Thomas for a corner three as he reclaimed Maccabi's lead (22:25). Pnini's three pointer started a 10:0 run giving the hosts the 37:30 lead. Kane and John-Di scored five unanswered points to cut Holon's lead to 37:35, but Holon had the final say in the second quarter as they finish the first half ahead 40:35.
Cole scored a three pointer at the beginning of the third quarter (38:40), Holloway reacted with a lay, but Kane scored another three pointer (41:42). Both teams exchanged threes as Holon was still ahead 47:46. The yellows continued putting the pressure on Holon as Cole scored his third three pointer of the night to give Maccabi the 49:52 lead. Kane and Cohen increased Maccabi's lead to 49:56. Rice trimmed Maccabi's lead down to 53:56. Cole made sure to increase Maccabi's lead to 55:62 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Holloway was the last to score in the quarter as the yellows hold the 57:62 lead.
Rice Jr. scored both free throws but Cole reacted immediately (59:64), Rice continued trimming the yellows lead down to just one point (65:66 but) Thomas reacted with a three pointer to increase the yellows lead to 65:69. Holloway's three pointer completed a 5:0 run to give the hosts the 70:69 lead forcing coach Spahija to call for a timeout. John-Di scored a three pointer but Pnini tied the game (72:72). Glen Rice and Joe Alexander gave Holon the 76:74 lead with less than two minutes left in the game. Thomas tied the game with 55 seconds remaining, Holloway gave Holon the 78:76 lead. Rice fouled Thomas on a three point attempt with 10 seconds remaining in the game, Jackson replaced Thomas who was ejected and scored two free throws to tie the game (78:78). Kane with a huge block on Holloway sends the game to overtime.
Cole was the first to score in overtime but Holloway tied the game (80:80), both teams struggled to score but Kane drew a foul and gave Maccabi the edge (80:81), Alexander gave Holon the 82:81 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Pnini and Rice increased Holon's lead to 84:81. Alexander increased the hosts lead to 86:81 from which Maccabi couldn't recover.
