Saturday at 19:00: Maccabi faces Panathinaikos
After a successful tournament in France, Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv is shifting up a gear in their preparations as they'll face Panathinaikos on Saturday (19:00, live on channel 5plus) as part of the "Pavlos Giannakopoulos" preseason tournament.

For the first time this season, Scottie Wilbekin will see action wearing the yellow uniform. On the other hand, Angelo Caloiaro, who is nursing a hamstring injury, did not make the trip to Greece as he'll continue his recovery in Israel. During the half time break against the greeks, a ceremony will be held to Maccabi's president Shimon Mizrahi.

Before the game, Maccabi's coach Giannis Sfairopoulos and captain John DiBartolomeo took part in the official press conference (streamed live on our official Facebook page) that included all four captains, coaches and Panathinaikos president Dimitris Giannakopoulos.

Coach Giannis Sfairopoulos talked on behalf of the Club: "I would like to thank Panathinaikos for inviting us to this tournament honoring the memory of Giannakopoulos. I want to thank his family that has done so much to contribute to basketball worldwide."

Sfairopoulos added on the importance of these games: "It is an excellent opportunity for us to understand where we stand because we haven't had some EuroLeague level games so far. It would be a great test for us to see what we need to correct before the start of the season."

Captain John DiBartolomeo said towards the start of the tournament: "We are excited to be a part of such a high-level tournament with great clubs. I want to wish all the teams best of luck".

Last season in the two-game regular-season series, the teams split 1-1 each winning on their home court. The Yellow & Blue faced Panathinaikos in Greece on opening day, losing in dramatic fashion 84:89. Scottie Wilbekin went off for 24 points and 8 assists while Tarik Black in his EuroLeague debut finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds. In the second game between the two in Menora Mivtachim Arena, Maccabi came up on top 84:79 behind Angelo Caloiaro's double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Wilbekin's 13 points.

Once again, Panathinaikos holds a strong cast of players as they brought in a familiar face, Argiris Pedoulakis, to coach the team for the third time in his career. All-EuroLeague first team point guard Nick Calathes will once more handle the duties for the greens, as he will get help by Ex Maccabi EuroLeague champion, Tyrese Rice that joined the greek Club this past summer. The team added two intriguing Ex NBA players, shooting guard scorer Jimmer Fredette and small forward Wesley Johnson that has under his belt 618 NBA games.

Other names closing out the greens roster is another Ex Maccabi PF Deshaun Thomas, PF Ben Bentil, SF Rion Brown, C Jacob Wiley, SG Nikos Pappas, C Giorgos Papagiannis, SF Ioannis Papapetrou, and C Ian Vougioukas.
