Maccabi 101: The Spirits of Yad Eliyahu
Fifty five years in the making, two renovations, three names and one fortress, the Menorah Mivtachim arena is perhaps one of the most well-known arenas in Europe, the magical arena has seen it all from nail biters to record breaking games that became instant classics enroute of entering the basketball pantheon, The Menorah has been for quite some time the place to be, especially on Thursday nights and it is synonymous to the prestigious basketball club Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv.

How did it all start?

The Yad Eliyahu arena was built at the Yad Eliyahu neighborhood in 1963, and was inaugurated in a basketball game between the Israeli and the Yugoslavian national teams. In its early years it was a roofless court with 5,000 seats in the form of concrete stands. In the late 60's the arena was practically rebuilt as additional 5,000 seats were added (upper stands) as well as roof, making the arena the first of its kind in the country.

Starting at the 1972/73 season the arena became the permanent residence of Maccabi, needless to say that in 1972 the arena was the state of the art, and it was chosen to host the FIBA Champions Cup finals game that year and also in 1994. In 2004 the arena hosted the EuroLeague final four were Maccabi set numerous ground breaking records as they were crowned as the EuroLeague champs after beating Skipper Bologna by 44 points in front of 11,000 hyped fans in yellow and blue.

Nokia have purchased the name rights for the arena at beginning of the 2003/04 season, the arena was named the "Nokia Arena" for a decade. In January of 2015 "Menorah Mivtachim" have purchased the name rights of the arena for the duration of eight years.

Between 2005 and 2007 the arena has went through an extensive architectural renovation that transformed it to the state of the art luxurious complex that it is today. Over 11,000 seats, including 24 private boxes as accustomed in the NBA. The outer circle of the arena includes restaurants, cafe's and the Maccabi official store.

Needless to say that the Yad Eliyahu Arena was granted the status of a fortress in Europe between 1977 and 1983 a duration in which the yellows didn't lose a single home The arena has known thrillers, disappointments, great wins, emotional wins records and titles that have touched the entire country. It's safe to say that the arena has become an inseparable part of the Israeli culture and society.
