Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv continued its pre-season schedule on Saturday, taking a defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich by a score of 95-107 in the Neofytos Chandriotis tournament in Cyprus. Oded Kattash's men could not overcome a big shooting day by the Germans, who made 16 three-pointers out of 28 attempts.
The yellows' defense remains a work in progress, understandably so - it is only the team's second run together and two of the squad top defensive specialists were out: John DiBartolomeo and Jaylen Hoard both nurse minor injuries. Even so, Maccabi showed promise on offense, especially when Rokas Jokubaitis took over in the 4th quarter with 14 out of his team-leading 24 points in the final frame.
The Lithuanian could not overcome a shooting frenzy by the Bavarians, led by Carsen Edwards who made 7 triples and 27 points in total. Maccabi started the game with a 12-2 run, but Bayern came back early and led for most of the proceedings.
Jordan Loyd added 15 and Wenyen Gabriel chipped in with 13 points and 7 boards. Tamir Blatt (11) and Roman Sorkin (10) also scored in double figures.
Next up for the Israeli champions is a confrontation with Panathinaikos in their second and final game of the Cypriot tournament. It will be the first meeting out of two this pre-season between the 2024 EuroLeague playoffs rivals.
