{"id":31651,"date":"2011-11-14T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8080\/maccabi-in-maalot-ohayon-were-happy-to-help-the-community\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T08:40:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T05:40:34","slug":"maccabi-in-maalot-ohayon-were-happy-to-help-the-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maccabi.co.il\/en\/maccabi-in-maalot-ohayon-were-happy-to-help-the-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Maccabi in Ma\u2019alot \u2013 Ohayon: \u201cWe\u2019re happy to help the community\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P><FONT size=2 face=Arial>By Amy Samin<\/FONT> <BR><\/P> <P><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Taking advantage of their position as the team with a bye this week in the Israeli League, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv used their free time to do some community service work, playing a friendly game against Hapoel Ma\u2019alot-Tarshihah before a crowd of hundreds of students in the gym at the ORT School.<\/FONT> <BR><\/P> <P><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Also present were Uzi Dayan, chairman of Mifal Hapayis, who suited up for Maccabi, the mayor of Ma\u2019alot Shlomo Bohbot who played for Hapoel Ma\u2019alot-Tarshihah, Maccabi\u2019s chairman Shimon Mizrahi, and Avner Koppel of the League Administration, who made a speech to the students. Maccabi won the twenty-minute game (two halves of ten minutes each) by a score of 54 \u2013 42; even having Shawn James and Guy Pnini on their team for the second half didn\u2019t help the students get the win.<\/FONT> <\/P> <P align=center><IMG border=1 hspace=0 alt=\"\" align=baseline src=\"https:\/\/www.maccabi.co.il\/mtpic\/IMG_3167.jpg\"><BR><\/P> <P><FONT size=2 face=Arial><B>Yogev Ohayon<\/B>, who grew up in nearby Kiryat Shmona, spoke about the visit and about giving back to the community: \u201cIt\u2019s fun to come to the north, the air is good here. We\u2019re happy we came and we\u2019re happy to help the community. It really helped us that Shawn and Guy played for Ma\u2019alot-Tarshihah; it was all a trick on our part. We thought they would help us more, but the guys on that team played good defense. It was a tough game, and it\u2019s good that we were able to win. We were surprised by the enthusiasm here in Ma\u2019alot, but on the other hand Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv is the nation\u2019s team. Contributing to the community is very important to us. We\u2019re people who need to do more than just put the ball in the basket.\u201d<\/FONT> <BR><\/P> <P><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Team captain <B>Tal Burstein<\/B> added, \u201cWe just finished a long trip, we only just landed in Israel yesterday evening, but I love these activities on behalf of the community. It\u2019s really nice to see that we have fans throughout the country. We haven\u2019t started talking about [the Euroleague game on Thursday against] Charleroi yet.
