On Sunday: Maccabi and Jerusalem vies for the Winner Cup trophy
Maccabi Playtika will look to hoist the season's first trophy on Sunday (9 PM local, 2 PM ET), when they square up against Hapoel Jerusalem in the Winner Cup final. The yellows have won the last three editions of the competition, and are determined to make it four in a row. Oded Kattash will be without Antonius Cleveland and James Webb III who were not registered for the game per league restrictions.

The Israeli champs reached the final after beating Kiryat Ata in the quarters, and after Hapoel Tel Aviv forfeited the semis. Jerusalem, on the other hand, defeated Hapoel Holon in the semi finals.

This is Maccabi's 16th finals appearance in 18 years of Winner Cup's existence. Seven of the previous finals were against Sunday's rivals, who actually holds the head-to-head advantage with 4 victories to Maccabi's 3. The yellows won the title 10 times, while the capital city's team won it five times.

Aleksander Dzikic's team kept most of its roster intact, with a few notable additions. Jerusalem added former Maccabi swingman Yovel Zoosman alongside fellow Israeli big Gabi Chachashvili. As for foreign players, Jerusalem signed guard Brynton Lemar, veteran forward Chris Johnson in his second stint with the team and senegalese forward/center Maurice Ndour.

Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv squandered a first half lead and lost in the Winner Cup finals on Sunday, with a 79:71 scoreline in favor of Hapoel Jerusalem. The yellows were without Wade Baldwin (back) who was injured during warmups, while Josh Nebo (foot) was hurt in the first half and only played 9 minutes.

Despite being short-handed, Maccabi controlled the game in the first half, leading by and many as 10 points thanks to an intense defensive effort and the scoring by Bonzie Colson. But a 6-point lead at halftime was quickly erased after the break, with Jerusalem taking control until the final buzzer.

Lorenzo Brown was Maccabi’s leading scorer with 16, while Colson and John DiBartolomeo each contributed 13. They could not make up for a disappointing shooting display by the Maccabees, with only 5 made three-pointers out of 24 tries.

Maccabi will look to bounce back on Thursday when the season officially kicks off, with Yad Eliyahu paying host to a EuroLeague encounter against Partizan Belgrade.
