In Maccabi’s last visit to Madrid, over eight years ago. They beat Real Madrid 76-68. But tonight Maccabi reminded us those far days wjen they were hammered in ths Spanish Capital. As it happened several time this season, Maccabi had a terrible first quarter, scoring only 13 pts to Real’s 23. The injured Will Solomon did not start but was brought in and never came into the game and even did not try a shot. Four minutes into the second period, Maccabi were 23 points down (17-40). But thanks to Anthony Parker, Maccabi came back with a 14-5 run and at half time the margin was 31-45. The third period is usually Maccabi’s best and so it looked when they came to 38-47. But soon they faltered again and Real led 69-48 at the end of the period. Two three pointers by Kirk Penney and some great plays by the excellent Anthony Parker took Maccabi on a 12-0 run and the margin `was cut to 9 points (60-69). But Igor Rakocevic and his friends came back with three successive three pointers and assured their deserved 90-75 win. The stats sheet indicates that there was very little between the two teams except in three points and free throws. Real made 13 three pointers from 27 (48%) to Maccabi 6-16 (37%). The Spaniards made 83% un their FT and Maccabi only 68%.. Anthony Parker had an Index Rating of 39 to become Player of the week, He played 38 minutes and had 26 pts in 69% FG and 89% FT, 5 rbds, 4 asts & 4 stls. Nikola Vujcic scored 18 pts but in 50% FG and also made 4 rbds & 3 asts. Other Maccabi scorers: Sharp 8, Arnold 7, Penney 6, Burstein 6, Baston 4. Green, Shason & Solomon, did not score. A superb game for Igor Rakocevic with 18 pts, 6 rbds, 6 asts. Other top scorers for Real: Bullock 17, Hervelle 15 & Reyes 10 pts.
