Maccabi Tel Aviv suffered its first Israeli league loss of the season, 89-90 against Hapoel Galil Elyon at Kfar Blum. Maccabi’s league streak of 14 wins came to an end in a disappointing performance by most of the players in yellow.
Tal Burstein had a solid game with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists, but his friends were nowhere near their top form. Coach Oded Katash, Maccabi’s former superstar, led Galil to its fifth win in the last six games. Omri Caspi, on loan from Maccabi, led Galil with 17 points.
Maccabi Tel Aviv led 12-4, but Galil had a good run and midway through the first quarter took the lead. Maccabi struggled on offense and Caspi gave Galil a big lead, 34-23. In the third period, who else but Derrick Sharp found his touch and with 3 three-pointers gave Maccabi a 66-64 lead.
The lead kept changing hands in the last quarter until Gili Mosinzon from Galil scored the winning basket 3.8 seconds to go. Halperin missed with the buzzer and the crowd at Kfar Blum celebrated a huge win for the home team.
