Khyri "Tazz" Thomas is a strong guard who is not afraid to shoot from the perimeter or drive to the basket. He tries to take advantage of the opportunities that the defense gives him and also knows how to put pressure on ball handlers. His defensive skills stood out to many scouts as he finished his time as a college player thanks to his ability to produce steals, good positioning and agility that allows him to stay mostly ahead of the dribbling player he is guarding. So far he has shown confidence in his shot behind the arc and he uses his power to penetrate all the way to the rim even in front of larger guards.
Thomas was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, where he also played in high school before moving to a military boarding school in Virginia. He played at Creighton College from his hometown, was twice named Defender of the Year in the Big East and in his third and final season there he averaged 15.1 points (41.1% from three), 4.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
In the summer of 2018, Thomas was selected by Philadelphia in 38th place in the NBA Draft and was traded to Detroit. He was later sent to Atlanta, played for the Nuggets' G-League team and also for San Antonio's, before signing a short-term contract in Houston last May.
Wearing the Rockets uniform he managed to make 5 appearances by the end of the season and averaged 16.4 points, 5 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per evening. In total he made 42 appearances in the best league in the world.
In November 2021, Thomas was signed by Bilbao as a replacement for the injured Andrew Goudelock and already in his first appearance in the Spanish league he starred against Baskonia with 23 points (52.3% from the field) and 3 steals. In his next game he managed to play 8 minutes before injuring his right ankle.
