Maccabi Tel Aviv is a synonym of words like victory, achievements and success, in Israeli sports and also around Europe. The club was established as a blue and white basketball branch back in 1932. Blue and white were the initial colors of the club before embracing the color of yellow in the early 40's as an act of solidarity with the European Jews who were forced to wear the yellow badge on their clothes.
Maccabi has won the first five Israeli championships in the newly declared state, and has established itself as a force to be reckon with from day one. Two years after the six days war, the yellows archrivals Hapoel won the domestic championship and the state cup leading to a revolution within the management of the club. A young attorney, Shimon Mizrahi was appointed as the interim chairman of the basketball division. Back then even he didn't know that the interim appointment will become the most permanent one in sports. The legendary coach Yehoshua Rozin was relieved of his duties as head coach, and instead a former player that has become a young and promising coach Ralph Klein was put at the helm. From that point it was upwards and onwards.
The management led by Shimon Mizrahi hade surrounded the open court with fences and in addition to selling tickets for the games being played which was unorthodox back then, thus creating the initial and substantial financial advantage over the opponents. In the sports aspect the goal was to put the emphasis on competing in European basketball. From that moment on the yellows have won 23 consecutive championships, and all championships until 2008 excluding one. As a matter of fact in the EuroLeague the goal that was set was to be able to compete with Real Madrid within a decade. Eight years into the project Maccabi won its first ever European championship.
The historic EuroLeague championship in 1977 is considered as a turning point for the yellows who established themselves as "the people's team" throughout the world. That year on their road for glory – which was followed by the iconic phrase made by the team captain Tal Brody "We're on the map and we're staying on the map not just in sports…..in everything" – the yellows defeated the mighty CSKA and for the first time lifted the "Iron Curtain" on their way to the finals held in Belgrade. The fact that Maccabi's games were broadcasted in channel one, the first and only channel in Israel contributed to making Maccabi's games the place to be for the Israeli public for a long period of time, thus creating cultural icons such as Tal Brody, Mickey and Moti, Aulcie Perry, "Nesher'Ke", Jamchy, the duo "KatahSheffer" and others.
Maccabi Tel Aviv won the European championship six times and the intercontinental cup once. In its 20 encounters versus NBA teams the squad in yellow and blue has made some notable achievements while playing against teams from the best league in the world: the first European team to ever play against an NBA team, the first to beat an NBA team, the first to beat an NBA team on north American soil and even the first ever foreign team to fill out the Madison Square Garden completely in an exhibition game – far from its home court where they compete on a regular basis.
Maccabi Tel Aviv – Always competitive
There is no competitive environment than in sports which is its entire essence. There is no more competitive team than Maccabi. Throughout the years it was the miraculous comeback wins when all seemed lost such as the "Badalona miracle", the "Zalgiris miracle" and the "Milan miracle" that helped shaping the spirit, character and image of the club. The list of titles that Maccabi has won is long and distinguished. The 57 domestic championships and 45 State cups helped coining the term – Maccabizm which –means an uncompromising never say die spirit and always go for the win.
Maccabi was amongst the founders of the top tier Israeli league, the perennial Israeli champs was never relegated. Each week the yellows face the best teams that basketball has to offer domestically and in Europe where Maccabi has established itself as one of the most decorated clubs in the continent with six European championships. Maccabi's biggest rivals are coming from much bigger markets such as Spain, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Italy, Germany etc.
In addition to the domestic competition which is consisted of 12-13 teams that are playing three rounds and playoffs, Maccabi Tel Aviv holds an A license from the EuroLeague. There are only 11 clubs in Europe that have a permanent entry to Europe's top tier basketball competition who are also members of its management – Maccabi is one of those clubs. Each year, five additional clubs join the 11 founding clubs, in the coming years the competition will expand and include additional teams for the purpose of expanding into additional markets.
Being a member of the EuroLeague puts Maccabi in the continent's center of attention almost on a weekly basis, just like Barcelona, Madrid, Athens, Istanbul, Moscow and Milano. The exposure to such broad audiences alongside the club's success, signing well known players and recruitment of marketing partners puts the club in a level of its own above the direct and indirect rivals in the Israeli sports scene.
According to data presented by DAVNIS sport, no less than 41% of the sports fans in Israel consider themselves as Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv fans to some degree, for comparison the next ranked local brand received only 17% of support.
