Maccabi Outlasts Bnei Herzliya 93-91

In a hard-fought battle that came down to the final seconds, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv defeated Herzliya 93-91 on the road. Smith was outstanding with 34 points (a career record in the Israeli League) and 8 rebounds.

In a hard-fought battle that came down to the final seconds, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv made an incredible comeback and defeated Herzliya 93-91 on the road. Devin Smith was outstanding with 34 points (a career record in the Israeli League) and 8 rebounds. Brian Randle contributed 16 points and 5 rebounds, and Jeremy Pargo added 13 points and 6 assists. Team captain Yogev Ohayon made 11 assists, and Jake Cohen provided the game-winning bucket with 1.6 seconds left in the game.

Maccabi’s starters were Yogev Ohayon, Jeremy Pargo, Devin Smith, Brian Randle, and Alex Tyus. After a close start to the game, Smith and Ohayon gave Maccabi a 10-5 lead after three minutes. The hosts wouldn’t let the yellows break their lead wide open, and with two threes closed to within two. MarQuez Haynes and Pargo scored from downtown, and Joe Alexander added a dunk in the paint to give the visitors a double digit lead, 24-14 with less than a minute and a half left in the period. A half-court bomb by Haynes beat the buzzer to close out the quarter with Maccabi leading 32-17.

Herzliya looked like a different team as the second quarter got underway, running 14-2 to make it 34-31after three and a half minutes.  Randle scored to stop the run, but the hosts tied the score and, despite nine points by Smith, continued to answer every shot. The half ended with Herzliya leading 51-50.

Despite a nice bucket by Randle and a reverse layup by Smith, the home team continued to dominate the game in the third quarter, taking a 72-60 lead with just under four minutes left in the period. Points by Smith, Alexander, and a fadeaway triple from the left side by Haynes positioned Maccabi to make a comeback as the period ended with the hosts holding a 77-68 lead.

More points from downtown (assist Pargo) and in the paint by Smith made it a four point game, 77-73 a minute and a half into the final quarter. Herzliya reopened their lead, but back to back threes by Pargo and Smith made it 83-81 at the halfway mark. Smith scored again to give the lead back to Maccabi, but from there the lead changed hands repeatedly, with Smith continuing to supply the fight and the points for the yellows. With :17 on the clock and the score tied at 91, Jake Cohen scored to give Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv a 93-91 win over Bnei Herzliya
