The Yellows delivered a great defensive game to overpower Olimpia Milano and their ex Andrew Goudelock 79-68 in the fifth round of the EuroLeague. Maccabi's lead were up by 20 in the third quarter but allowed the Italian team to cut the lead to just 11 on their way to third EuroLeague, Alex Tyus was the game MVP with a double double of 12p & 15r.
Maccabi's ability to dominate the boards have played a decisive role in tonight's win, the team's frontcourt dominance on the offensive rebounds manage to tie its all-time record for offensive rebounds in one game as they took 19enroute of winning the battle of boards 49-30, as it also allowed 64 2P attempts.
Spahija started the game with: Jackson, John-Di, Roll, Bolden and Parakhouski. The Belarusian big man could not be denied in the paint and alongside Jackson led Maccabi to 6-3 lead three minutes into the game. Milano reacted and stayed close to Maccabi, Tarczewski tied the game at 14-14 however it was Tyus and Thomas who had the last word ass the first quarter ended with the yellows ahead 18-14.
The second quarter opened in the same way the first ended, with Maccabi having the momentum as Segev Thomas and Kane managed to put their team up by seven 23-16 in the 12th minute. Tyus delivered the block of the roundon Jefferson's expense, was also very active on the offensive end which made Milano call for a timeout as they were trailing 27-18. Cole and Segev finished the second quarter as Maccabi were up 39-29.
The second half started with both teams struggling to score, Roll scored Maccabi'sthree pointer of the night as the yellows increased their lead to 13 (42-29), Micov scored five points to take down the lead to 11 (45-34), Maccabi answered with five points scored by Roll and Jackson as the scoreboard showed 50-34 25 minutes into the game, from that moment Kane Thomas and Parakhouski made it 60-40, Gudaitis was the last to score in the third quarter to make it 60-42.
Cole was unstoppable at the beginning of the fourth quarter as he led Maccabi to a 66-45 lead, Goudelock and Bertans managed to cut the lead down to 17 (70-53) which made Coach Spahija call for a timeout. Milano continued their offensive run this time with Kalnietis who took the lead down to 13 (72-59) with a three pointer, Maccabi kept its composure till the end with a 79-68 win.
