In the tenth round of the Euroleague Top 16, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv was defeated in Spain by Barcelona, 89-71 and dropped to third place in Group E. Joe Alexander led Maccabi's scorers with 16 points, Sofo Schortsanitis added 15 points, and Brian Randle scored 10 points.
Starters for Maccabi were Jeremy Pargo, Devin Smith, Brian Randle, Yogev Ohayon, and Sofo Schortsanitis. The hosts got off to a good start, running to 7-2 after two minutes. A pair of buckets in the paint by Sofo brought Maccabi within one, but Barcelona responded with a another run that took them 21-11 with less than four minutes left in the period. Joe Alexander scored five straight to cut Maccabi's deficit to five, but the period ended with the home team holding a 26-16 lead.
The second quarter opened with points by Sofo in the paint, a huge three by MarQuez Haynes, and a reverse layup by Nate Linhart that made it 27-23 after two minutes. Barcelona continued to score from outside the arc, and despite a layup by Pargo rebuilt a double-digit lead halfway through the quarter, 36-25. Maccabi's shots didn't drop, and Barcelona's lead grew to fifteen, 45-30 with two minutes left in the half. Points by Smith and Randle didn't help much, and the teams went into the break with the score 47-34.
Maccabi looked better at the start of the second half, closing to 47-40 in the first minute and a half, but Barcelona soon responded and, thanks to points from the charity stripe, regained their double-digit lead; halfway through the period the score was 61-46. Points by Alexander and Sofo put Maccabi a little closer, 64-53 as the third quarter came to an end.
Alexander, Linhart, and Randle combined to make it 72-62 three minutes into the fourth quarter. A trey by Smith in the left corner put Maccabi within nine at the halfway mark, but the home team continued to dominate, and in the end Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv fell to Barcelona 89-71.
