Give Thanks: Maccabi Defeats Caja 81 – 70 | Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball

The Spanish champion’s winning streak against Maccabi was broken Thursday night in a crucial 81 – 70 win for Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, who is one step closer to nailing down the number one spot in Group A of the Euroleague.
Lior Eliyahu played brilliantly against his former team, scoring 18 points and pulling down 6 rebounds.
Jeremy Pargo (14 points, 5 assists), Chuck Eidson (12 points, 7 assists) and Yaniv Green (9 points, 6 rebounds) also played an important part in the win.

Jeremy Pargo, Lior Eliyahu, Chuck Eidson, Doron Perkins, and Sofoklis Schortsanitis opened the game for Maccabi, facing off against David Logan, Mirza Teletovic, Brad Oleson, Stanko Barac, and Fernando San Emeterio for the Basques.
The early minutes of the game saw the lead trade hands repeatedly, with Maccabi looking to Sofo under the basket on offense and to Chuck at both ends of the court.
Eliyahu, with six straight points (including a slick spin & in, and a dunk off an assist from Perk) and a huge block put Maccabi up 13 – 9 at the mid-way point in the period.
The pace picked up as Perk and Pargo felt the need for speed, with the latter’s defensive rebound-to-layup flight making it 17 – 11 with three and a half minutes left in the quarter.
San Emeterio closed the gap, but Maccabi didn’t let up, with Sofo scoring off a nice dish from Pargo to give Maccabi a 21 – 13 lead.
The period ended with the score 21 – 15.
 
The second quarter opened with a three-pointer for Maccabi, Sofo-style (bucket and one), putting Maccabi up 24 – 15.
Barac caused some trouble for Maccabi under the basket, but David Blu didn’t let the Spaniards get too close, dropping a classic bomb from downtown to set the score at 27 – 19 after an offensive rebound by Pargo.
Perkins showed lots of hustle on defense, but Barac celebrated under the basket, tying the game at 27 all near the halfway mark in the period.
Pargo drove to the basket to retake the lead, and Perk nailed a three to give Maccabi some breathing room, 32 – 29.
A tip in by Yaniv Green made it 34 – 29, and strong effort by Eidson at both ends of the court brought him two rebounds and an assist to Eliyahu.
Pargo’s reverse layup put the seal on the half, with Maccabi in the lead 38 – 32.

Caja opened strong in the third quarter, coming within one, 40 – 39, but a dazzling three-pointer from Eliyahu stopped them in their tracks.
Points from Eidson under the basket were followed by four straight from Pargo; with four minutes left in the period Maccabi led 49 – 41.
Teletovic and company then got back into the game with a vengeance, pulling within one, 49 – 48.
Points, a steal and an assist from co-captain Tal Burstein (to Eidson) gave Maccabi some space, 53 – 50 with a minute and a half on the clock.
Another steal, by Perkins this time, led to more points from Eliyahu, and the period ended with Maccabi still leading, 55 – 51.
 
A huge rejection by Eliyahu and a CE-13 missile from the left side gave Maccabi a quick jump on the final quarter.
A steal by Perk led to a one-handed dunk by the electrifying Eliyahu (assist Eidson) that gave Maccabi their biggest lead of the game to that point, 61 – 51.
With three minutes gone in the period, Burstein knocked down his 100th three-pointer in Euroleague action, putting Maccabi up 64 – 55.
Green made his presence felt in the final three and a half minutes of the game, with a basket and one, a putback, and a dunk off an assist from Pargo on offense and a huge block on defense with seconds remaining.
Burstein scored off a dish from Eidson, who finished serving up the Thanksgiving treat with two from the charity stripe.
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv’s 81 – 70 victory over Caja Laboral leaves them in sole possession of first place in Group A.
