Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv signed talented point guard Omer Mayer to a three-year deal, keeping him with the team through 2027. The 17-years-old playmaker is coming off of an impressive debut season with the senior squad, and now tied his future with the yellow-and-blue.
"It's a great satisfaction and great pleasure when a player who is a graduate of the youth department, as well as the club's academy, comes to play in the ranks of Maccabi's first team and establishes himself in it", said the chairman of the club, Shimon Mizrahi. "Omer Mayer will help the team in the tasks and challenges that have been set for us this season".
"I'm excited to continue at the club I grew up in", Omer Mayer said after signing the new contract. "I'm looking forward to continuing to learn and help my team be the best it can be".
"We are very happy that Omer is continuing with us", clarified coach Oded Kattash. "He is a talented and diligent player, who started a process with us last season and made progress. I am sure he will make another leap this season as well".
"We are happy that Omer is continuing with us in a natural course", said sports director Avi Even. "Omer Mayer is the fruit of investment and hard work of the youth department, who continues the process with the senior team. He is a role model for every child who starts playing in our basketball school and the club's youth department. He proved in the past year that he is suitable to be part of the Israeli nucleus that will lead the team in the future".
Mayer (1.93 M / 6ft 4in), who has been part of the club’s youth program since he was 8 and played for the U18 team since he was 15, was promoted to the professional team last summer and made his mark. Besides his size and strength, Mayer showcased a soft shooting touch, court vision, maturity and courage.
In 24 total Israeli league appearances, the guard played an average of 12.5 minutes in which he contributed 4.7 PPG and 1.8 APG. Mayer also participated in 5 EuroLeague games, notably scoring a three-pointer against ALBA Berlin that made him the youngest ever Israeli to score in the competition. He carried this momentum into the summer, starring for the U18 national team in the European championships with 18.3 PPG, 6.6 RPG and 5.1 APG – all the way to a historic semi-finals appearance and a ticket to next year’s U19 World Championships.
