Maccabi Origins: Derrick Sharp

A Winner, A Captain, A Legend, Derrick Sharp wore the yellow and blue jersey for 15 seasons and while doing so he made the most memorable miracle happen

The story of Derrick Sharp and Maccabi Tel Aviv is nothing less of a beautiful fairytale named do you believe in miracles? How else could you explain 13 domestic championships, 11 Israeli Cups and three European titles? Derrick's story is arguably one of the most inspirational stories to be told in European basketball, and it goes together, hand in hand with the rise of the yellow dynasty.

Derrick started his professional career in 1993 with Maccabi Hadera of the second division, in fact he played in the second division for a total of three season before making the unforgettable jump. It didn't take long for the former USF guard to fall in love with the land of milk and honey as not only did he started a family, he also became an Israeli citizen.

Three years and 66 points later (scored in two games against Maccabi Tel Aviv) it was clear to all that Derrick and Maccabi would be a match made in heaven and as such what was bound to happened became official as Sharp joined the Maccabi family in the 1996/97 season. 



In his first season in yellow and blue Maccabi lost the Israeli Cup finals to Jerusalem but went on to complete a perfect domestic championship going undefeated in the regular season and sweeping Hapoel Eilat in the semis and Hapoel Jerusalem in the finals. That year his first game was a clear sign of what's to come as finished the game with nine points going perfect from deep.

Throughout the years there were a lot of glorious moments that Maccabi and Derrick shared, to be exact it was pretty much from day one as the relentless defender secured nailed a midrange jumper to secure an 82:78 for Maccabi over Olympiacos in the yellows' 1996/97 EuroLeague campaign.

It goes without saying that the day that Maccabi signed Derrick was the day where the perennial champs laid the foundations for the return of the yellow dynasty as Derrick became one of the pillars in Maccabi's quest for greatness that was achieved in Bercy with a 20 year old draught coming to an end.

Derrick has done a lot for Maccabi and for the Israeli national team, for us our captain was and still is a role model, his on and off the court amazing personality is truly remarkable, his winning mentality and never say die spirit are a way of life that Maccabi owner, player, fan and position holder shares, we knew it before the Zalgiris miracle and we all say it proudly: We all want to be like Derrick.
