The newly crowned Israeli high school champs, Tichon Hadash high school, made history with a dramatic 78:79 win over Greece to win the High School World Championship. Eight players of the Maccabi youth department were in the roster.
The high school team of Tichon Hadash, who won the Israeli championship a few months ago, made history by winning the high school world championship tournament after a dramatic buzzer beating 78:79 win over Greece. No less than 8 players from the Maccabi Tel Aviv youth department were in the roster.
The Maccabi players that are in the roster of Tichon Hadash' are: Nadav Sahar, Amit Aharoni, Yanir Gadot, Yonatan Atias, Shalev Ozery, Amit Tsidon, Tal Tsidon and Dori Sahar who is also playing for the Maccabi first team.
In the group stage of the championship, Tichon Hadash played against high schools from Taiwan, Brazil and Cyprus and won all three games. In the eighth-finals the Israelis faced the team from Taiwan with the former advancing to the quarter-finals where they've eliminated the Macedonian team.
After beating Belgium in the semis, the Israelis faced the hosts of the tournament – Greece – in the finals. In the decisive play, Ariel Lachovic received the ball for an open corner three that sealed the 78:79 dramatic win. Loten Amsalem (son of Shimon Amsalem) led the scorers with 19P, Dori Sahar added 13P. Lachovic, Nadav Sahar and Yonatan Atias scored 10P each. Amit Aharoni (8P), Yanir Gadot (4P), Amitay Rotem (3P) and Tal Tsidon (2P).
With the majority of its roster consisted of the Maccabi basketball academy, the Tichon Hadash high school team completed a perfect tournament with a record of 7:0 to claim the high school world championship crown.
"In the finals we faced a Greek high school; they also had a clear advantage in the stands, but we fought hard and worked as a team to make this dream come true, to be crowned as the world champions", said Dori Sahar to the Maccabi official website. "It was an amazing experience. We've met and got to know a lot of people from different places in the world, different playing styles and different methods. It was an experience to absorb all of this knowledge".
"We, the players of the team, want to thank all the people that supported us from home, to our families that traveled with us and cheered us all the way, to our coach Nahum Segal, to the team manager Asher Breit and to the principal Limor Markinson", Dori Sahar added. "This is an amazing achievement that honors Maccabi Tel Aviv and its academy with 8 players in yellow and blue".

The tournament that was organized by the International School Sport Federation (ISF), was held in Heraklion, Crete. A total 50 teams (24 teams of Boys and 26 of Girls), coming from all over the world- except for the United Stated of America, have participated in the competition.
