Alexander Gomelsky, the Jewish basketball coach that died at the age of 77, will be buried tomorrow in Moscow.
Gomelsky had close relations wuith Maccabi Tel Aviv BC since the historic meeting between Maccabi abd CSKA Moscow in Virton, Belgium in 1977.
In the last few years he served a eth President of CSKA and came with the team to Tel Aviv for the 2004 Final Four. The last meeting was in May in Moscow during the 2005 Final Four.
Gomelsky started his career as a coach with Skonto Riga which he led to win the first three editions of the European Cup. With CSKA he won one European Cup and 10 Soviet Union Championships. With The USSR National Team he won 2 World Championships and 8 European Championships. His greatest achievement was winning the Gold Medal of the 1988 Olympic Games.
In 1995 Mr. Gomelsky was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
