Israel, as usual, doesn’t offer Maccabi any real competition.”

For the second year in a row, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv’s official website has been named one of the top 5 sports websites in Israel by Mako.co.il (the website of the Keshet television network). The other sites so honored were those belonging to Sport 5, ONE, Maccabi Haifa Soccer, and Hapoel Tel Aviv Basketball.

In addition to the extremely well-run website, the team maintains an official forum, a fans’ website, an iPhone application, a huge well-updated Facebook page, and perhaps best of all – a YouTube channel that contains hours and hours’ worth of historic and current basketball.
Maccabi’s YouTube channel currently contains 1,343 (!!!) videos that immortalize the glorious history of the club as well as the impressive present of the current team. According to the rate at which the channel is updated, often in the middle of the night, you’d think there must be dozens of devoted and diligent employees working on the channel. Who knows? Maybe Derrick Sharp is uploading video clips in the hours before dawn?
Maccabi’s Facebook page currently boasts over 66,000 members, which makes it the largest Israeli page on the popular social-network website. The team frequently updates the page, which keeps the fans aware of the happenings in the club, basically making them the first to get credible updates straight from the club itself. For example, it was on the Facebook page that the news of Jordan Farmar’s and Theo Papaloukas’ signing with the club first appeared, even before the news appeared on conventional media websites.
Suggestion for improvement: While news is updated frequently on the website, one can only see the last four stories on the home page of the website. In order to find the archives, one must first open the page for one of the four current articles. Also, maybe in light of the events of this past summer, the time has come to change the picture (though it’s a great one) of Derrick Sharp on the Facebook page?
In one sentence: Even Avner Kopel (head of the Israeli Lotto League) can’t destroy what Maccabi has built.
