A disappointing loss at home for Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv to Maccabi Ashdod Beer Tuvia, 88-83. Sylven Landesberg led Maccabi’s scorers with 14 points, Yogev Ohayon added 12 points, Guy Pnini scored 11 points, and Brian Randle contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Starters for Maccabi were Yogev Ohayon, Brian Randle, Guy Pnini, Trevor Mbakwe, and Jordan Farmar. The start of the game was balanced, with points by Ohayon, a reverse layup by Farmar, and slams by Mbakwe and Randle giving Maccabi an 8-7 lead after three minutes. Ohayon and Mbakwe added points in the paint, but Swann tied the score at 14 with a long three with four minutes left in the period. Pnini and Trevor Rochestie scored from downtown, and a steal by Randle led to a long pass from Pnini to Sylven Landesberg for the layup; Maccabi led 23-21 at the end of the first quarter.
Ashdod grabbed a 26-23 lead in the first minute of the second period, but Rochestie and Ohayon responded to reclaim the lead, and Ike Ofoegbu and Pnini combined to make it 33-26 Maccabi close to the halfway mark. Maccabi continued to play well on defense, while Randle and Pnini extended Maccabi’s lead to nine, 39-30. Ashdod managed to close to six, but Landesberg and Itay Segev added points that sent the teams into halftime with Maccabi leading 46-36.
The two teams traded three pointers at the start of the second half, but Randle from the foul line and the paint (assist Ohayon) put the hosts up by ten, 54-44. Garrett was the main source of points for the visitors, as he and Thomas brought them to within four. Segev and Randle scored in the paint, and a dish from Segev to Landesberg outside the arc made it 63-52. A last second layup by Ohayon ended the quarter with Maccabi up 65-54.
Segev and Landesberg kept Maccabi in the lead, 71-59 after two minutes. Ashdod didn’t give up, and led by Garrett went on an 11-0 run that took them to 71-70 halfway through the quarter. Pnini and Mbakwe reopened Maccabi’s lead slightly, but it didn’t take long for the visitors to tie the score and it stayed close for several minutes until Swann drained a key trey that gave Ashdod an 84-80 lead in the final minute of the game. Points from downtown by Rochestie were too little too late, and Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv was defeated at home by Maccabi Ashdod Beer Tuvia 88-83.
