In round 6 of the Euroleague regular season, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv was defeated at home by CSKA Moscow, 88-82. Trevor Rochestie led Maccabi’s scorers with 20 points, Brian Randle contributed 19 points, Ike Ofoegbu added 15 points and 7 rebounds, and Devin Smith scored 14 points.
In his first game as head coach, Zan Tabak’s starters were Brian Randle, Yogev Ohayon, Devin Smith, Jordan Farmar, and Arinze Onuaku. The first half of the first period was pure defense, and after five minutes the score was tied at only 4. Maccabi continued to play iron-clad defense, while on offense Randle and Trevor Mbakwe built a 10-4 lead. After calling a time out, CSKA came back and pulled to within two, 12-10, until free throws and a putback by Ike Ofoegbu and a steal by Ohayon that ended with points by Trevor Rochestie reopened Maccabi’s lead. At the end of ten minutes the hosts held an 18-13 lead.
The guests got off to a much better start in the second quarter, and closed to 20-19 after two minutes. Rochestie and Randle scored to protect Maccabi’s lead while continuing to play tough defense, making it 26-21 four minutes into the period. Teodosic scored a string of points to put CSKA on top 30-26, but Rochestie on the left wing and Smith in the corner kept Maccabi close, 35-32 with three minutes left in the half. The visitors clung to a slim lead, while another fast break layup by Randle and Guy Pnini from the top of the arc kept Maccabi in the game, 38-37 to CSKA going into halftime.
Points by Randle at the start of the third quarter put the lead back in Maccabi’s hands, and two assists by Randle helped to keep it there. Free throws by Smith and a dunk on the fast break by Randle made it 49-44. Teodosic and CSKA fought to stay close, and midway through the period Maccabi led by only one. The home team loosened up on defense and the Russians took advantage, opening up a 59-53 lead. Ofoegbu, Sylven Landesberg, and five straight by Rochestie gave the lead back to Maccabi with a minute left in the quarter, but once again CSKA was able to claim the lead and the period ended with the visitors up 65-63.
CSKA opened the final quarter with two three pointers that increased their lead to 74-63 in the first two minutes. Four straight by Smith got Maccabi back into the game, while Randle and Ofoegbu scored from the charity stripe to cut Maccabi’s deficit to single digits halfway through the period. It didn’t take long for the Russians to reopen their lead to 81-70, and points from Landesberg, Smith, and Randle just weren’t enough; Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv was defeated by CSKA Moscow 88-82.
