Dear Fans,
Rosh Hashanah is almost upon us, and soon we will all celebrate the start of the year 5774, in the hope that it will be a blessed year and that all of our wishes – whether for ourselves or for our favorite sports team – come true. In keeping with our time-honored tradition, I am sending you this letter with a bit of information about the coming season.
We were able to maintain the core of our team from last season including Shawn James, Devin Smith, and Ricky Hickman in addition to our fine Israeli players, Guy Pnini and Yogev Ohayon – about whom it was recently determined that he does not have a binding contract with Kuban – and Sylven Landesberg who has started his army service.
Those players are being joined by newcomers Joe Ingles, who comes to us from Barcelona and who, together with the Australian National Team, won the FIBA Oceanic Championship, American guard Tyrese Rice, Alex Tyus who is currently with the Israeli National Team taking part in preparatory games before the start of the FIBA European Championships which will be held in Slovenia starting on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, Jake Cohen who has Israeli citizenship, Yuval Naimy who has returned to Israel after a year in Russia, and last but not least, Sofo Schortsanitis who has returned to us after a year playing in Greece and who I am positive will be starting the season in top form.
It is hardly necessary for me to tell you that two of our coaches, David Blatt and Guy Goodes, remain with us. Guy has taken on the additional task of serving as the assistant coach for the National Team of Great Britain, which will face the Israeli National Team in their first game of the European Championships on Rosh Hashanah eve.
To our sorrow, after his 17 years with the club we have parted ways with Derrick Sharp, who began his journey as a bench player and went on to become one of the most outstanding players of all time, and who served as team captain and as assistant coach of the team. Alon Stein, one of the coaches of the youth department, will be taking his place as second assistant coach and we wish Derrick great success in his new path in life.
And speaking of partings, we have also bidden farewell to our team manager Gur Shelef, who served in his position with great devotion and for that we offer our warmest thanks, and we also wish him well in his new ventures. His position has been filled by a former Maccabi player, Nikola Vujčić, who played an important part in some of the team’s greatest successes and who will add to his role as team manager that of coach to the team’s big men.
In addition to all of those mentioned above, two young Israelis have joined the team – Ben Altit and Arad Harari – since players Idan Zalmanson and Itay Segev have been loaned for one year to Bnei Herzliya and Holon, respectively, so that they can get playing time and experience before they return to the club.
It is my pleasure to tell you that, as in recent years past, Electra Consumer Products will remain the main sponsor of the club, and this is the place to give thanks to the Zelkind family and to the CEO of the company, Mr. Yaki Vadmani, for their partnership and the warm relationship between the company and the club.
Despite the fact that there is still a month and a half to go before the season starts, sales of season tickets have been advancing well. In order to facilitate the process of distributing the season tickets, we have implemented a small change: tickets may be picked up at the club’s offices at 293 Hayarkon Street in Tel Aviv as follows:
1. Ticket holders of seats in sections 5, 6, 11 and 12 may pick up their tickets starting on 1 September.
2. Ticket holders of seats in sections 1, 4, 7, and 10 may pick up their tickets starting on 15 September.
3. Ticket holders of seats in sections 2, 3, 8 and 9 may pick up their tickets starting on 29 September.
Our traditional gift to season ticket holders – a wall calendar featuring the players of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv – will be handed out during a special, festive evening which will include an open practice at Nokia Arena. It will be your first opportunity to see the team in its complete, new format. Additional information will be available soon.
We wish you and your families, and all of the Jewish people, a New Year filled with happiness, peace and achievement.
Wishing you a blessed and Happy New Year,
Shimon Mizrahi
