On April 8th 2018, Maccabi Tel Aviv announced its decision to start a the 2018/19 season with two rosters, one for the Israeli domestic league and one for the EuroLeague. The reasons that have led the club to go with the two rosters plan were fully explained and detailed in a meeting held at the Maccabi Hall (i.e. Hall of fame) where all the members of the media were invited. The two roster plan was explained with a presentation made by the club. All the rules and regulations of the domestic league were thoroughly detailed and compared to other leagues in Europe (ACB, Turkish BSL etc.) and the differences between the leagues were shown in the aforementioned presentation.

The presentation that was also printed and was put into binders was given away to all so that the two rosters plan and the reason for choosing this path could be explained. The assumption leading to the decision (i.e. the two roster plan) was explained on slide 21 of the presentation: “Maccabi had to come to acceptance with the fact that the current rules and regulations being applied in Israel will remain in one way or another”.

During this period of time a few changes have already been made such as the cancellation of the “Russian Rule”, changes within the foreign players quota and the formation of the Sharabi committee who has yet to release its report and conclusions. In addition the league administration is reevaluating the rules and regulations that are under its responsibility.

Under these circumstances, it will only be right for us to wait for the results of all discussions of both the committee and the league administration out of faith that all parties involved are acting for the same purpose – in favor of the Israeli basketball. Therefor, for the time being, the decision that was made and announced on April the 8th 2018 is on hold.
