Maccabi loses 79:81 to Baskonia at home
Coach Sfairopoulos' squad controlled the game but a late comeback by the visitors left a side in yellow and blue extremely disappointed. DeAndre Kane stood out with a heroic performance of 13P, 6R, 2S and 2A
Coach Sfairopoulos’ starting five: Wilbekin, Kane, Caloiaro, O’Bryant
and Black. Toko scored from the free throw line but Maccabi reacted with a 5:0 run (5:1). Maccabi increased their lead to 10:4 but Janning and Hilliard helped Baskonia take the 10:13 lead. Angelo scored a corner three but the visitors reacted with another 5:0 run to take the 13:18 lead, Maccabi reacted but Toko completed a three point play with Baskonia having the 17:22 lead at the end of the first quarter.Diop scored at the beginning of the second quarter but Ray and Cohen reacted with an 8:0 run to complete the comeback forcing coach Perasovic to call for a timeout (25:24). Roll and Wilbekin increased the yellows’ lead but Poirier and Janning completed a run for the hosts who managed to take back the 32:33 edge. Kane scored four points as Maccabi completed a 7:0 run (39:33). Diop was the last to score in the second quarter but the yellows were the ones to have the 41:36 lead.
Poirier scored but Tyus connected with Caloiaro for a thunderous dunk (43:38). Johnny scored five points as the squad in yellow and blue increased their lead to 50:42. Vildoza and Wilbekin traded blows from deep with Maccabi having the upper hand (55:45). Hilliard made it 57:50 but Ray answered from deep to keep the visitors at bay. Shengelia finished the third quarter strong beating the buzzer from deep with his team trailing 61:54.
Baskonia started the fourth quarter with a 6:0 run (61:60 forcing coach Sfairopoulos’ to call for a timeout. Roll scored four points but Vildoza answered from downtown (65:64). Kane and Scottie scored back to back threes to make it 71:64 as the fourth quarter reached its halfway mark. Janning and Hilliard completed a 9:2 run to tie the game (73:73) with just under three minutes remaining in the game. Tyus completed the
three point play to put Maccabi ahead 76:73. Toko and Poirier completed a6:0 run to take the 76:79 lead with 01:20 remaining in the game. Tyus and Kane tied the game from the free throw line (79:79) with 30.8 seconds remaining in the game. Poirier scored giving Baskonia the 79:81 edge giving Maccabi the chance to take the game but the yellows couldn’t capitalize this time as the guests grabbed the 79:81 win.
