Maccabi hosts Red Star Belgrade, looking for a second Euroleague win
After winning a thriller against Bayern Munich in the season opener, the yellows will face the Serbs on Thursday (21:05 local time, 2:05 pm ET). Sfairopoulos: "We are facing a very dangerous opponent"
Although Maccabi signed Mathias Lessort to replace injured Ante ?i?i? (who will be out until November), it is still unclear if the French center will be available to coach Giannis Sfairopoulos. With or without Lessort, the yellows will try to maintain the tremendous defensive form so far this season (no opponent scored more than 68 points against Maccabi).
“We are facing a very dangerous opponent,” said Sfairopoulos when asked about the Serbs that also did not concede more than 70 points in any game thus far. “They have very experienced players and great qualities. We’ll be very focused and ready for a battle”.
The Greek coach also had a message for the fans: “I hope and expect that our arena will be packed again. We need our fans, every single one of them, to get this win”.

“Winning the MVP of the week title is not important to me. It does not matter”, said Scottie Wilbekin, Who put on a fantastic show against Bayern, scoring 28 points, including two crucial free throws that eventually won the game. “We had a week to prepare, and I think now we’ll look better on the court.”
Maccabi stumbles at home against Red Star Belgrade
A disappointing evening at Menora Mivtachim ended with the yellows' first Euroleague loss this season (63:75). Wilbekin led Maccabi's scorers with 18 points, Lessort scored 16 on his debut
From start to finish, everything went wrong for the Israeli champs, while the Serbian opponents arrived very sharp and prepared and made it difficult for Maccabi to create any organized attacks. On the bright side, the newly signed French center Mathias Lessort scored 16 points on his debut.
The yellows have very little time to recover from this loss. On Saturday, Hapoel Haifa will face them, again at Menora Mivtachim, in the Israeli league opening matchday.
