Maccabi's quest for top 8 continues against Red Star

The Yellows will host the Serbs on Thursday, looking to build on the momentum from their win in Valencia. Lorenzo Brown may make his return. Sorkin: "Statistics show how tough it is to defeat us at home"

Share Article
“Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv suffered several tough losses this season, particularly in away games. One of these losses came against Red Star Belgrade in November. Despite a late fourth-quarter comeback, the Yellows lost 68:69 to the Serbs after a missed buzzer-beating three-pointer by Lorenzo Brown.

Tomorrow (Thursday at 9 pm Israel time, 2 pm EST), Oded Kattash’s team will have a chance to settle the score with the Reds and keep its hopes of reaching the top 8 alive. The good news may come from Brown – Maccabi’s star point guard might play for the first time since picking up an injury two weeks ago.

Two more reasons for optimism are Bonzie Colson’s recent form, with three double-doubles in the past five games, and Maccabi’s impressive home record of 9 wins and a single loss, the best in the Euroleague. Combine that with Red Star’s negative streak of four straight losses, and you have a clear favorite.

‘It will be a challenging game against an intense team”, Kattash stated. “They have two outstanding guards who can generate scoring opportunities, and it will be difficult to contain them. Although they are experiencing a rough patch, they have kept playing well, even in losses.”

Roman Sorkin, who extended his contract with Maccabi this week, shared his feelings before addressing Red Star. “The first dream I had was to get to Maccabi, and from there on, I was trying to improve and raise my level. Today I feel this club is my home. I hope to see a packed arena tomorrow because the numbers and stats prove how difficult it is to play against us at home”.

Maccabi falls to Red Star Belgrade at home, 86:89

Wade Baldwin's 38 pushed the Yellows to a late comeback after already trailing by 16, but the Serbs crossed the finish line first. On Monday: state cup semi-final

Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv was very close to completing one of its biggest comebacks of the season this evening (Thursday) against Red Star Belgrade, but despite a late comeback from minus 16 and an outstanding personal performance from Wade Baldwin, the Yellows fell to the Serbs at home, 86:89.

Without Lorenzo Brown, who sat out due to injury, Maccabi started the game hesitantly and paid for it instantly. Nemanja Nedovic pushed the guests to a double-digit lead before halftime and helped increase the margin to 16 points in the third.

That’s when Baldwin took matters into his own hands. Maccabi’s fantastic guard scored 26 of his 38  (club record) in the second half. Unfortunately, the Serbs kept their composure in the final minutes to seal an impressive victory and hand Maccabi a second Euroleague home loss that may prove crucial in the battle for the playoffs.
