On Thursday: Maccabi clashes with Red Star in Belgrade

The Yellows will face a challenging encounter against Dusko Ivanovic's improving team. Kattash: "It's time for us to win away from home"

Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv’s busy week will reach another peak on Thursday as the Yellows will clash with Red Star in Belgrade. Oded Kattash’s players will try to get a third win in five days, after already beating Hapoel Tel Aviv and Olympiacos at Menora Mivtachim Arena.

With five wins and four losses under their belt, the Yellows will have to pay close attention to Nemanja Nedovic, Luka Mitrovic and Luca Vildoza who scored 53 points together in Red Star’s win over Alba Berlin. The rebounds may also play an important key as the Serbians are considered leaders in this parameter.

“We know that in two-game weeks in the EuroLeague, anything can happen,” said Kattash ahead of the game. “There are no easy games in this competition and we have to keep our focus. It’s time that we win away from home as well”.

“We’re trying to get our first away win,” added Bonzie Colson, “We’ll have to stick to the basic things that win games. It’s going to be a crazy atmosphere there, but the win over Olympiakos creates momentum for us and I hope it will help us”.

Justifications and reasons are out there if one wanted to use them: the fourth game in six days, on the road, against a team that had momentum on its side. But despite all of these factors, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv was very close to getting its first Euroleague away win on Thursday. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen.

The Yellows lost 68:69 to Red Star in Belgrade, after cutting the hosts’ lead in the fourth quarter and coming within a shot away from securing a win. Maccabi had the last possession, but a missed three-pointer by Lorenzo Brown (23 points) in the last second determined the final score.

On the positive side, Oded Kattash’s players showed improved defense, Roman Sorkin continued his rise with 16 points (new personal Euroleague record), and the Yellows won the battle of rebounds again. On Sunday, Hapoel Jerusalem will arrive in Tel Aviv, and Maccabi will hope to put aside the disappointment and triumph in the Israeli Clasico.
