On Tuesday: Maccabi squares up against Milano
The Israeli champs play their fourth road game in a row and will look to get back to a winning record (9:30 PM Israel time, 3:30 PM ET. Cleveland: "We need to let our defense lead to our offense"
Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv will play its fourth consecutive road game on Tuesday, meeting Milano in Italy for a Round 2 game postponed due to the war (9:30 PM Israel time, 3:30 PM ET). The yellows will look to bounce back after the defeat in Monaco last week and go back to a winning EuroLeague record.
The Israeli champs are still without star guard Wade Baldwin IV, who will gradually return to team activities next week. The Italian rivals announced that their star, forward Nikola Mirotic, is questionable with an achilles tendon injury.
“We are coming off a very bad game in terms of energy and also basketball-wise”, said head coach Oded Kattash, “We have to find the energies to lift ourselves up, even though it is a complicated situation. As always, our thought are with the people back home, the soldiers, the fans – and we would like to play better and give ourselves a chance to win for them”.
“Milano offers different challenges to us, mainly in terms of size”, added Kattash, “They are a very disciplined team. Our keys are limit our turnovers – we are turning the ball over too much lately – and control the boards on both sides of the court. It will not be simple”.
Swingman Antonius Cleveland had this to say ahead of the game: “(We need to) let our defense lead to our offense and enjoy our game. We enjoy the game when we are playing free. our keys defensively are to guard without fouling, rebound the ball well and stick to player personnel”.
Milano, led by veteran head coach Ettore Messina, had a sluggish start to the season, winning only one out of 4 EL games. Apart from Mirotic, who joined the team from Barcelona, Milano also added German point guard Mando Lo and former Maccabi big-man Alex Poythress.

Last season, it took 15 rounds for Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv to win its second road EuroLeague game. This season, a season in which the word Road got a new meaning, the yellows were much quicker to the milestone. Oded Kattash and his men prevailed in Milano by a 98:90 scoreline on Tuesday, winning its second road game of the campaign after just five rounds.
Coming off of a bad loss in Monaco, the Israeli champs bounces back in the best possible way. Being out of home for about three weeks and still missing Wade Baldwin, Maccabi played a great offensive game, led by Lorenzo Brown.
Maccabi’s point guard scored 20 points and dished 12 assists, tying his personal best and Maccabi’s EuroLeague record – a feat he himself set just a fortnight ago. It was his third game of the season with more than 10 assists and he leads the league with 8.8 per game.
But it wasn’t all Lorenzo. On his 30th birthday, Jasiel Rivero delivered his best performance with the Maccabi uniform, leading the team’s scorers with 21. Bonzie Colson continued his great start to the season with 16 points, while Antonius Cleveland contributed 15. Josh Nebo had 14 points and Tamir Blatt amassed 7 dimes of his own.
The win propelled Maccabi to a 3-2 record in the competition, good enough for the 9th position in the standings. Up next is a “home” game in Belgrade against Bayern Munich next Thursday.
