On Thursday: Maccabi faces Real in Madrid

The Yellows will try to beat the Blancos away for the first time since 2008. Zizic: "We are not afraid of them. If we stick to our game plan, we can win"

After two straight losses in the Euroleague, Maccabi Playtika Tel-Aviv wants to get back to winning, a challenging mission when considering the opponent that is waiting for the yellows on Thursday.

Maccabi will face Real Madrid (21:45 local, 2:45 pm ET) and try to get an away win over the Spaniards for the first time since 2008. The Blancos currently have the best record in the competition (10:2) along with Barcelona.

“We are playing against one of the top candidates to reach the Final Four,” said Giannis Sfairopoulos just before taking off for Spain. “They are in great shape and still haven’t lost at home. We must focus on playing good defense and stop them on a team level. If we focus on just one player, someone else will do the damage.”

“It will be a difficult game, but after two losses, it is also a great opportunity to recover,” added Ante Zizic. “Real is playing very well this year, but we are not afraid of them. If we stick to our game plan, we can win”.

Maccabi loses to Real Madrid in a thriller

The yellows played great and entered the final quarter with a 9 point lead, but the Blancos rallied back to win 72:70. Wilbekin scored 14 points

It can’t get much more painful than this. After two consecutive Euroleague losses, Maccabi Playtika Tel-Aviv gave an excellent performance in Spain but lost 70:72 to Real Madrid in a tight thriller.

Giannis Sfairopoulos’ team was dominant almost throughout the whole game and entered the final quarter with a 9 point lead, but it wasn’t enough. Unfortunately, the yellows were unsuccessful in stopping the hosts from scoring in their last possession and are now counting three Euroleague defeats in a row.

Scottie Wilbekin led Maccabi’s scorers with 14 points. Keenan Evans and Ante Zizic added 10 points each. Maccabi will now face Irony Ness Ziona in Winner’s league (on Sunday) before hosting Unics Kazan next Thursday.
