Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv defeated Maccabi Haifa 67-59 in week 26 of the Israeli Winner Sal League. Sylven Landesberg led Maccabi’s scorers with 11 points, Yogev Ohayon added 10 points and 5 assists.
Starters for Maccabi were Itay Segev, Gal Mekel, Brian Randle, Guy Pnini, and Sylven Landesberg. The game got off to a slow start with the score only 5-2, Haifa, halfway through the period. Devin Smith came into the game, playing for the first time since his surgery, while five points by Randle and a hook shot by Richard Hendrix (assist Smith) put Maccabi up 9-5 with three and a half minutes left in the quarter. Haifa managed to tie the score, but Hendrix from the foul line and Pnini from downtown at the buzzer ended the first quarter with the home team up 15-10.
The second quarter opened with a triple by Taylor Rochestie and a baseline layup by Yogev Ohayon that made it 20-14 after five minutes. Pnini, Randle (assist Hendrix), and Smith from the corner put Maccabi’s lead close to double digits, but Haifa’s Graves scored at the buzzer to make it 27-21, Maccabi going into the break.
Haifa cut Maccabi’s lead down to four at the start of the second half, but points by Landesberg and Segev made it 32-23 after three minutes. Maccabi played tough on defense and led 37-28 after points by Ohayon and Hendrix. Mekel scored his first points of the game and Landesberg added points on the fast break made it 46-36 Maccabi at the end of the third period.
Landesberg from the charity stripe and Dragan Bender from outside the arc put Maccabi up 52-38 a minute and a half into the final quarter. The visitors responded with an 11-3 run that made it 55-49 halfway through the period. A trey by Ohayon pumped up the yellows and put their lead back in double digits, 61-51 with two and a half minutes left in the game. From there Maccabi cruised to a 67-59 victory over Maccabi Haifa.
