Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv’s record in the Winner Sal League improved to 7-2 following their 89-73 defeat of Bnei Herzliya at Nokia Arena. Devin Smith (23 points, 9 rebounds) was named game MVP. MarQuez Haynes and Jeremy Pargo contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Sofo Schortsanitis, Alex Tyus, and Brian Randle scored 9 points each.
Maccabi’s starters were Devin Smith, Jeremy Pargo, Yogev Ohayon, Jake Cohen, and Sofo Schortsanitis. The opening minutes of the game were close, and after three minutes Maccabi held a 6-5 lead. A string of points by Herzliya put the visitors on top 11-9 halfway through the period. A 360 degree layup by Pargo, and Smith with a bucket and one closed out the quarter with Maccabi at -3, 18-15.
Brian Randle, in his first game back after an injury, scored five quick points and sent an alley oop pass to Alex Tyus for the dunk as the second quarter got underway, putting the home team in the lead 23-21 and changing the momentum of the game. The visitors woke up and briefly reclaimed the lead after five minutes of action, 27-26, but Smith stepped up as he so often does, scoring multiple points, taking rebounds and sending a dish to Tyus, and the half ended with Maccabi enjoying a 44-32 lead.
Maccabi continued to dominate as the second half got going, with Randle (assist Pargo), Tyus, and especially Smith scoring to extend Maccabi’s lead – 57-39 halfway through the third quarter. Herzliya seemed to stop playing on both ends of the court, while Sofo, Haynes and Pargo scored to finish the period with Maccabi up by twenty, 69-49.
Sylven Landesberg scored his first points of the game early in the fourth quarter, and was soon joined by Haynes and Pargo, 79-51 after three minutes. The visitors seemed focused only on playing offense, and offered no resistance to Maccabi’s shooters. In the end, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv defeated Bnei Herzliya 89-73.
