Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv was no match for the Russian powerhouse, which defeated the yellows 99-80 in Moscow, dropping the Euroleague champs’ record to 1-1. Brian Randle was Maccabi’s top scorer with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Sylven Landesberg added 14 points and 6 rebounds, and Guy Pnini contributed 12 points.
Jeremy Pargo, Brian Randle, MarQuez Haynes, Guy Pnini and Aleks Mari? were Maccabi’s starting five. Maccabi opened strong, running to 11-4 in the early minutes of the game thanks to points by Randle and Pargo. The Russians went on a 10-2 run that put them up 14-13 with two minutes left in the quarter. A nice drive in the lane by Sylven Landesberg put Maccabi up briefly, but the hosts responded, and the period ended with CSKA leading 21-19.
The momentum stayed with the hosts in the second quarter, as they extended their lead to 29-21 in the first two and a half minutes. Randle scored twice to put Maccabi within three, but at the halfway mark CSKA’s lead stood at 34-28. Maccabi had a hard time shutting Weems and the Russians down, and the teams went in to the break with the hosts leading 48-41.
CSKA came out on fire in the second half, outscoring Maccabi 20-4 in the first five minutes of the third quarter, 68-45. Pargo and Pnini added some points for Maccabi, but the Russians cruised to 80-54 as the third period ended.
Randle and Landesberg scored to cut the deficit slightly early in the fourth quarter. Haynes, Randle and Ohayon combined to work on the gap, but in the end CSKA defeated Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv 99-80.
