The management of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv met recently with Derrick Sharp and requested that he remain with the team in his role as second assistant coach. Sharp asked the management to give him some time to consider his options, and the club agreed. Guy Goodes will serve as assistant coach to the British National Basketball Team.

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and Derrick Sharp met recently to discuss his future in Israel in general, and with Maccabi specifically. Maccabi proposed that Derrick retain his role with Maccabi, and Sharp replied that he would like to take some time to consider his options in terms of his career and his family’s future in Israel. He asked Maccabi to give him a few weeks and of course Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv agreed, stating that they would not seek to fill the position until they had heard back from Derrick.
Guy Goodes has been named assistant coach of the British National Team heading into the European Championship competitions, which will take place in September in Slovenia. This will be in conjunction with his role as assistant coach with Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv. Great Britain will play in the same group with Israel, and will also face France, Germany, Belgium and Ukraine.
Goodes will serve as assistant to the head coach, American Joe Prunty, who has worked as an assistant coach in the N.B.A. for over ten years and who was named to the head coaching position on the British National Team just a few weeks ago. He worked for San Antonio, Dallas and Portland, and for the last three years served as assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he worked with Omri Casspi, among others.
Guy Goodes: “I am very excited to join the coaching staff of the British National Team and to be the assistant of Joe Prunty, a veteran N.B.A. coach. I would like to thank the management of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv for allowing me to accept this opportunity. I am extremely motivated and will do everything in my power to help the National Team succeed and reach new achievements.”
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv’s chairman of the board, Shimon Mizrahi said: “It is a great honor for us that another national team is interested in one of our coaching staff. We acquiesced with the request of Guy and the British, and we approved the appointment. We wish him good luck.”
In the last Olympic Games, which they hosted, the British National Basketball Team finished in 9th place, and in the last two European Championships (in 2009 and 2011) in 13th place.
