Maccabi Tel Aviv is pleased to announce that they have signed Brazilian center Vítor Faverani (27, 6’11”) to a one year contract with an option for a second year. Faverani, who played one season with the Boston Celtics, is a strong and versatile player who can play with his back to the basket and is also a solid shooter from mid-range and even from outside the arc. He is a strong rebounder and shot blocker as well as a great passer who knows how to find the open man.
Faverani, who was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, played for the youth team of Unicaja Malaga of Spain when he was 16 years old. By age 18 he was playing professionally for Saragossa, a team in Spain’s second division. Along the way he made several stops in Malaga’s pro team, including playing in seven Euroleague games during the 2008-09 season.
During the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Faverani played for second division Spanish club CB Murcia, and in his last season there was outstanding, averaging 14.9 points and 6.4 rebounds and helping the team reach the premier league in Spain. In 2012 and 2013 he improved further, and signed with Valencia, with whom he reached the Eurocup final (2012), and the semi-final the following year. In his second year there he contributed 9.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 17 minutes of playing time in the Spanish League, along with 6.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 14 minutes in the Eurocup.
In the summer of 2013 he made the jump to the NBA, signing with the Boston Celtics. He played in 37 games, where he averaged 4.4 points and 3.5 rebounds in 13 minutes. His best game was against the Milwaukee Bucks, where he scored 12 points, took 18 rebounds, and had 6 blocks. Faverani also played 4 games for the Maine Red Claws of the D-League, where he contributed 12.8 points and 9 rebounds. In March of 2014 he was sidelined following surgery for a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.
