Just 48 hours after their impressive defensive display against Darussafaka, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv faced Ness Ziona in the 19th round of the domestic league. The squad of coach Sfairopoulos kept their as they composure coming back from being down by 23 points with a defensive clinic limiting their opponents to only 44 points in the second half enroute of an 87:82 home win. Maccabi will now start to prepare for their next game against Rishon Le Zion on the road in just 48 hours.
“It’s obvious that we didn’t start the game well”, said coach Giannis Sfairopoulos. “If you watch the stats sheet you can understand that in the first period that there was only one team on the court and that was not us. We  came without concentration and without energy and we were very bad everywhere, on defense on offense turnovers fastbreaks from the opponents we allowed 38 points and that is very bad, but this isn’t because of basketball, this was because of mental preparation that we were not ready”.

“This is a problem and we need to learn from it”, coach Sfairopoulos concluded. “We cannot have the same approach when we come to play a game, any game. The good thing is in the next three periods they scored almost like they did in the first, we started to play defense we cut the point difference from 23 to 9 and then to 3 in the third and we won the game. We need to learn from this game, I don’t want to see it again from our players and I told them that in the locker room that we didn’t pay with the result and we won the game and this is very important for us, if we are smart we will not make the same mistake again”.

“We came out kinda flat”, said Johnny O’Bryant. “Ness Ziona is a really good scoring team a lot of good shooters, a lot of good creators, we just got to do a better job coming out especially at home getting to the groove. At the second quarter and in the second half we really stepped it up started playing some defense and got the win. It’s basketball, we just got to do a better job coming out being professionals and approach each game the same.

“For whatever reason we came out flat really tough start but that’s the good thing about our team we got battle tested guys we got experienced guys, we know how to fight and get a W”, added O’bryant. “Coach always does a great job of telling us to calm down and play the game, he always keeps his composure he did a good job staying on us and making sure that we do what we do”.
