Maccabi enjoyed the historic victory in Spain. Sfairopoulos: “We mainly won because the Israeli game got postponed and because we came into Vitoria with a charter flight. The players came into the game fresh to play with energy”
Maccabi broke the club record for three pointers in one game, and set it at 17, after the old one was 16. The yellows won their six win in a row and did it with 6 players scoring double digit points. Scottie Wilbekin was the top scorer with 20 points and added 6 assists.
Giannis Sfairopoulos said after the game: “We won the game mainly for two reasons: the postponed game in the Israeli League and the owners that arranged us a charter flight. It allowed the players to come fresh, to play with energy and intensity that we showed in this game. For that, I want to thank the owners that gave us this flight”.
About the game the coach added: “From the beginning until the end we controlled the rhythm of the game. Baskonia, especially at home, can beat everybody. We played good defensively all game especially in the second quarter that they scored only 11 points. On the other hand, we had an excellent offensive game scoring 113 points, and that’s because we gained confidence through defense. We need to stay humble and to continue to work hard”.
Scottie Wilbekin: “I felt good on the court, felt like everything was working for us defensively and offensively. We sticked to our gameplan like we have been doing and it is working for us. Everybody played good finding good looks, the ball just kept on going in”.
“it was a big win for us”, point guard Nate Wolters summed it up. “we needed that win tonight, and everyone shoot the ball well. they didn’t lose at home untill this game and we knew we had to play good offense and defense. we knew that they are good in transition so we made also a good job not turning the ball over”.
