Maccabi’s sports director, Nikola Vujcic, speaks about the work of the new professional committee, the principles behind the building of the new team, and his expectations for the season
A few weeks before the team will start to train, we spoke with Maccabi’s sports director Nikola Vujcic about the work of the professional committee, the building of the new team, and his thoughts about the summer signings.
Tell us a little bit about the joint work with Oded Katash, David Blatt, Avi Even, and Yair Shevah
“We have excellent cooperation and had many discussions about players we could bring to Maccabi. We analyzed all the options, and I believe that with the options available to us, we did a good job. The goal was to bring more players with Euroleague experience so we can compete for our objectives.”

What were the primary considerations in the search for new players?
“Experience and character, these are two things we were looking for. We also wanted players who were hungry for success on the biggest stage. Of course, we had to bring in talented players who could be future stars in the EuroLeague like Bonzie Colson and Jarell Martin. In our opinion, they can make a difference for us.”
“We needed guys that could withstand Maccabi’s pressure and play in such conditions. These are players that must understand the importance of winning every game.”
On paper, how is the building of the back line different from what we have seen in recent years?
“We added players who can play the 1-2 positions like Baldwin and Lorenzo. They can also play together. With Hollins and Hilliard, we got more depth and can use different combinations without depending on a specific player”.

Guy Pnini returned to the club after five years. What is he supposed to bring with him?
“Guy is a great player and can bring experience and influence to the dressing room. He can return a winning touch with him. Of course, he is a more mature player today and will be able to help a lot in all kinds of situations that develop during such a long season.”
What would you like to see from Roman Sorkin in his second season with Maccabi?
“The first season in Maccabi is difficult for everyone, but this season is even more important for him because he can take a step forward. We expect more consistency from Roman and want him to show his highest level game after game”.
